Remainder of 2019/20 G League Season Cancelled

On June 4, it emerged that the remainder of the NBA G League’s 2019/20 season has been cancelled. Shortly after the news hit, from many outlets, that the NBA was set for a return in Orlando, it appeared that the G League would not be following suit. Instead shutting down the remainder of the current campaign.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium initially broke the news.

The final games of the season were played back on March 11. With the season being suspended a day later, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The G League officially released a statement confirming the cancellation of the 2019/20 season:

“While canceling the remainder of our season weighs heavily on us, we recognize that it is the most appropriate action to take for our league,” said Abdur-Rahim. “I extend my sincere gratitude to NBA G League players and coaches for giving their all to their teams and fans this season.  And to our fans, I thank you and look forward to resuming play for the 2020-21 season.”

The statement continued with confirmation that the G League end-of-season awards winners will be announced in the coming weeks. This includes the Most Valuable Player award, along with the Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards.

There’s no word on when the G League 2020/21 season will tip-off. Various reports are suggesting that the NBA are targeting December 1 for the start of the new season. Traditionally the G League season begins 2-3 weeks after the start of the NBA season.
