On June 18, it was officially announced that Tremont Waters of the Maine Red Claws had been named the 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year.
Waters won the award as a way of vote from the league’s 28 head coaches and general managers.
A two-way player with the Boston Celtics, 5-foot-10 Waters averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals over the course of the season. He sat 6th in the league in assists per game, and had 10 games where he dropped 20+ points and 7+ assists.
On November 27, 2019, Waters erupted for a season-high 33 points against the Greensboro Swarm. In the 155-131 win, he also registered 7 assists.
The 22-year-old was selected by the Celtics with the 51st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He has featured in 10 games with his parent team this season. Averaging 3.3 points and 1.2 assists, in 8.9 minutes per game.
Two-way players Jarrell Brantley of the Salt Lake City Stars and Devontae Cacok of the South Bay Lakers finished second and third in voting, respectively. Brantley averaged 18.8 points (51.2% FG), 7.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals, through 33 games. While Cacok averaged 19.4 points (65.9% FG), 11.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals, in 33 contests too.
