Austin Spurs Announce New Head Coach and General Manager

On November 11, 2020, the Austin Spurs announced a new Head Coach and General Manager. Matt Nielsen will be taking over Head Coach duties, after spending last season as an Assistant Coach with the team.

Nielsen, who is from Australia, becomes the seventh Head Coach in the franchise’s history. Who are the G League affiliate of the 5-time NBA Champions, the San Antonio Spurs.

Prior, he was an Assistant Coach between 2015-19 with the Perth Wildcats of the NBL in Australia. Where he was part of a team that won three NBL Championships.

His career in San Antonio began in the 2014-15 season, however. Where he was a Player Development Assistant with the Spurs. Additionally, he was an Assistant Coach for the Spurs’ Summer League team (2014-19).

Tyler Self has been named as Austin’s new General Manager. Which ends up being a promotion for him, after spending the 2019-20 campaign as the franchise’s Assistant General Manager.

Self joined the Spurs in 2017 as a Quality Assurance Assistant in the organization’s Basketball Operations department. This was following his graduation from the University of Kansas, where he graduated with a degree in Sport Management. He also played on the Jayhawks basketball team between 2012-17.
