On January 8, the NBA G League officially announced that 17 G League teams, plus the G League Ignite team, will take part in a bubble season. With the teams set to take the court in February at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando.
The top eight teams will advance to a single-elimination playoff. The Ignite team were not initially scheduled to take part in a traditional G League season. However, the 2021 season is far from the traditional structure.
G League Ignite will be eligible for the playoffs, and will have the opportunity to contend for a championship.
Further Bubble Details:
“We’re excited to be a part of the G League schedule at Disney,” said Ignite Head Coach Brian Shaw following the announcement. “This is a unique opportunity for our players to showcase their development while gaining a high volume of experience quickly against the caliber of talent they’ll face every day in the NBA.”
Any NBA teams that do not have a G League affiliate participating can assign roster players and transfer two-way players. This will be in line with the G League’s flexible assignment and two-way rules.
Whilst dates and schedules have not been officially announced, it is believed that players will arrive in the bubble on January 26. Ahead of a season start on February 9. The playoffs will reportedly begin from March 5-9.
“We are thrilled to get back to basketball and to fulfill our mission as a critical resource for the NBA in developing players, coaches, referees, athletic trainers and front-office staff,” said NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
“We worked closely with our teams, the Basketball Players Union, and public health experts to develop a structure that allows our teams to gather at a single site and safely play.”
The same Disney campus that is holding the G League bubble accommodated the NBA 2019-20 season restart mere months ago. Everyone entering the bubble at Disney World will be guided by “comprehensive leaguewide health and safety protocols”.
