2020-21 G League Bubble Roster Preview: Delaware Blue Coats

At the beginning of February, the NBA G League will host their 2020-21 season at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando. 17 G League teams will play in the bubble season, along with the G League Ignite team.

The top eight teams will advance to a single-elimination playoff to contend for the 2020-21 G League Championship. Of which the Ignite team, for elite prospects, is eligible for.

One of the teams entering the bubble is the Delaware Blue Coats, the affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers. In the cut-short 2019-20 campaign, the Blue Coats finished with a 22-21 record. Which placed them 6th in the Eastern Conference standings.

Let’s take a look at the Delaware Blue Coats’ 2020-21 roster, ahead of the G League Orlando bubble.

Frank Mason III (G) – Affiliate

Frank Mason III had an outstanding 2019-20 campaign, as he was named the G League MVP whilst with the Wisconsin Herd. Over the course of the season (24 games), he posted averages of 25.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1 steal. He shot 50.2% from the field, and 42.8% from 3-point land.

The 5-foot-11 guard holds NBA experience with the Sacramento Kings (2017-19) and Milwaukee Bucks (2019-20), where he has featured in 99 contests. He holds NBA career averages of 6.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

Lamine Diane (F) – Affiliate

23-year-old Lamine Diane steps up to the professional ranks for the first time, after spending two-years with the Cal State Northridge Matadors. The versatile forward averaged 25.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 steals, and 2 blocks during the 2019-20 season. His performances earned him Big West Player of the Year and First-team All-Big West honors.

Julian Washburn (G) – Returning

Julian Washburn is a G League veteran with over 175 appearances to his name. At the G League level, he has showed out for the Austin Spurs on 3 occasions, the Memphis Hustle (two-way contract), and the Delaware Blue Coats. Additionally, he has had stints overseas with Tigers Tubingen, Canterbury Rams. and Dorados de Chihuahua.

Through the 2019-20 season (39 games), the 29-year-old averaged 6.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals with the Blue Coats.

Justin Robinson (G) – Returning

After spending 4 seasons with Virginia Tech at the collegiate level, Justin Robinson signed with the Washington Wizards for the 2019-20 season. He featured in 9 NBA contests for the Wizards (1.4 PPG). Instead, he spent the majority of his time with their affiliate team, the Capital City Go-Go. In January 2020, he was waived and picked up by the Delaware Blue Coats for the remainder of the season.

Through the 2019-20 season, the 23-year-old averaged 14.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.4 steals, in 33 games for both the Go-Go and Blue Coats.

Brandon Sampson (G) – Returning

At the age of 23, Brandon Sampson already has 79 G League appearances to his name. The former LSU guard has featured for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (twice) and the Windy City Bulls. During his time with the Bulls (2018-19), he was on a two-way deal. He played 14 NBA games, posting averages of 5.1 points and 1.1 rebounds.

Whilst representing the Vipers during the 2019-20 season, Sampson averaged 13.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2 assists. This was in 42 contests, with 26 of those being starts.

Michael Frazier II (G) – Returning

Michael Frazier II is another that boasts a wealth of G League experience. As he has showed out for the Los Angeles D-Fenders, Iowa Energy, Fort Wayne Mad Ants, and Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The 26-year-old received an NBA opportunity with the Houston Rockets during the 2019-20 season, where he featured in 13 games. In those games he averaged 2.1 points on an average of 11.2 minutes per contest. For the Rockets’ affiliate team (17 games), the Vipers, Frazier II averaged 14.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.2 steals during 2019-20.

Jared Brownridge (G) – Returning

Jared Brownridge is a well-known name with the Delaware Blue Coats. As he has made 93 appearances for the franchise since the 2017-18 season. He did spend part of his rookie campaign (2017-18), in Italy with Pallacanestro Mantovana.

During the 2019-20 G League season, the 26-year-old guard averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists for the Blue Coats. This was through 42 games, with 7 starts.

Ivan Rabb (F) – Returning

Power forward/center, Ivan Rabb, spent the first two seasons of his professional career with the Memphis Grizzlies. Between 2017-19, he played in 85 NBA games and posted averages of 5.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1 assist.

After a short spell with the New York Knicks in the first half of 2019-20, Rabb joined their affiliate team, the Westchester Knicks. The 23-year-old featured in 29 G League games for Westchester, averaging 16.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks. His 12.1 rebounds were the 4th-highest in the entire league.

Braxton Key (F) – Draft

Braxton Key joins the professional ranks after spending 4-years with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Virginia Cavaliers at the collegiate level. In 2019, Key won the NCAA Championship with Virginia. As a senior, he averaged 9.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.2 steals.

Jemerrio Jones (F) – Draft

Jemerrio Jones is a versatile forward who is capable of playing in, and guarding, multiple positions. As a rookie he played for the South Bay Lakers in the G League. During his time with South Bay, he earned an NBA call-up to the Los Angeles Lakers. In 6 NBA games, he averaged 4.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals.

The 25-year-old spent the 2019-20 season with the Wisconsin Herd. With the Herd he averaged 10.8 points, 12.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.5 steals, in 45 games. He led the league in defensive rebounds (339), offensive rebounds (174), and total rebounds (513).

Dakota Mathias (G) – Two-Way

After an injury-filled rookie season with Club Joventut Badalona in Spain’s Liga ACB, Dakota Mathias signed with the Texas Legends in the G League for the 2019-20 season. Whilst shooting 39.5% from 3-point land, the 25-year-old averaged 18.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal, in 42 games.

For the 2020-21 season, Mathias is signed to a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. On January 11, 2021, he scored a career-high 14 points against the Atlanta Hawks.

Paul Reed (F) – Two-Way

Paul Reed spent 3 seasons with DePaul before signing a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2020-21 campaign. As a senior at DePaul, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged 15.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.9 steals, and 2.6 blocks.

On January 9, 2021, Reed recorded 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block against the Denver Nuggets. During his time on the court he held a team-high +13 rating.
